Gabe Sapolski on CM Punk & Daniel Bryan

December 21, 2011

Gabe Sapolski shares some interesting anecdotes about CM Punk and Daniel Bryan’s ROH tenures over at Heyman Hustle. It’s a brief but excellent read. Here’s an excerpt:

On CM Punk

It had been planned since 2004 for CM Punk to become ROH World Champion in the summer of 2005. Then one spring day Punk walked into my office in Bristol, PA and said that WWE offered him a developmental deal and he was going to take it. I tried to play it cool, and I knew Punk would end up in WWE one day, but this floored me and caught me totally unexpected. Punk was by far our biggest merchandise seller, he was a main eventer and all plans were set on him to carry the company.

On Daniel Bryan

Bryan was a talent I depended on from the very first ROH show to my exit from the company in October, 2008. In fact, he main evented that first ROH show, which also happened to be the first show I ever booked. Bryan matured and grew with the company, constantly being an “ace” and backbone of the promotion. No one was more respected by his peers. I call him the number one guy in ROH history. When the “tie” incident took place and Bryan departed WWE in 2010, I was fast to hire Bryan in the new promotions I was booking- EVOLVE and Dragon Gate USA.

Transcript of CM Punk’s Promo on RAW

June 27, 2011

Here’s the transcript of CM Punk’s groundbreaking promo on RAW that melted Stone Cold Steve Austin’s TV.

John Cena, while you lay there, hopefully as uncomfortable as you possibly can be, I want you to listen to me.

I want you to digest this because before I leave in three weeks with your WWE Championship I have a lot of things I want to get off my chest.

I don’t hate you John. I don’t even dislike you. I do like you. I like you a hell of a lot more than I like most people in the back. I hate this idea that you’re the best. Because you’re not. I’m the best. I’m the best in the world. There’s one thing you’re better at than I am and that’s kissing Vince McMahon’s ass.

You’re as good as kissing Vince McMahon’s ass as Hulk Hogan was. I don’t know if you’re as good as Dwayne though. He’s a pretty good ass kisser. Always was and still is.

Whoops! I’m breaking the fourth wall! (CM Punk waves to the camera)

I am the best wrestler in the world.

I’ve been the best since day one when I walked into this company. And I’ve been vilified and hated since that day because Paul Heyman saw something in me that nobody else wanted to admit. That’s right, I’m a Paul Heyman guy. You know who else is a Paul Heyman guy? Brock Lesnar. And he split just like I’m splitting. But the biggest difference between me and Brock is I’m going to leave with the WWE Championship.

Coming soon to your TV: Wrestler Wives

April 4, 2011

From TMZ ~

Multiple sources tell us the guys behind “Pit Boss” have teamed up with VH1 to produce a show which follows the wives of famous wrestlers — and the pilot has already begun shooting in Houston.

Sources say Sharmell Sullivan-Huffman (Booker T‘s wife), Stacy Carter (Jerry Lawler‘s ex-wife) and Jackie Haas (Charlie Haas‘ wife) are the main focus of the show.

I’m looking forward to this. It’s nice to see wrestling personalities be able to make a living after their tenure in the wrestling business is over. If this pilot does get picked up, I hope Ring of Honor and the WWE allow cameras backstage and give permission to use their wrestling footage.

The Hayabusa Weekly Wrap Up [8.12.2010]

August 11, 2010

The two writers of FighterHayabusa were at their weekly knitting circle.  Between double seed stiches and purled ladder patterns, the two men discussed a myriad of topics in the realm of pro wrestling.  Here’s a transcript of that awesome exchange!

Mascara De Fuego: Welcome to Fighter Hayabusa’s Wrap Up, the Summer Slam edition! How goes it Puma? Had any out of body experiences lately?

Great Puma: Only when I’m watching Yo Gabba Gabba, brother!

Mascara De Fuego: SO Puma, before we get to our Summer Slam predictions lets get the bullshit out of the way!

TNA’s EV2.0 angle and pay per view mess from last weekend

Great Puma: I think the Dixie and the TNA powers that be need to move on before they sink any more time, money and energy into a product that is outdated and very very old. It peaks some interest but it’s not the kind of interest you want to build upon in the future. EV2.0 does NOT make new stars. It is only a trip down memory lane and that is how they should go about. A strong wrestling promotion should never be INVADED by a bunch of has-beens and rebels who are already way passed their prime.

I respect ECW and the people who have contributed to its legacy. However, I’ve already moved on and I don’t need to see it revived in vain and in a company that doesn’t deserve its presence and legacy.

Mascara De Fuego: This is painful. This makes WWE’s send off a few months ago of the ECW brand epic compared to what they did on Sunday. People tend to forget that at the time ECW was innovative because it was up “with the times”. All it is now is just a bunch of hardcore guys trying to do what they did years ago and it is just not working. TNA has wasted time and money to rush a pay per view that came off horrible and worst of all did NOTHING for TNA. ECW had its day in the sun but that day set along time ago.

TNA and its TNA Title Tournament

Mascara De Fuego: I think its just another ploy by TNA to get a quick ratings boost but I think its stupid to take the title off of RVD. If they think he is the reason for the bad ratings they are sadly mistaken as not even Jeff Hardy can save TNA right now.

Great Puma: I feel the same way. Did Angle’s climbing up the rankings storyline get trashed in the process? That was one of the few things that was actually working over there. Unless RVD requested this personally to take some time off (which I doubt), this is a horrible idea. I’m surprised they haven’t looked at the history of pro wrestlig and seen how hotshot booking is a bad idea 9 out of 10 times. It never benefits a promotion in the long run.

Mascara De Fuego: I wish I could get behind this storyline with Angle but its just making the entire top roster look weak because no one believes that Angle is actually going to lose a match, thus “retiring” from wrestling. This will obviously kill that story which once again means TNA has dropped the ball. It’s so surreal how bad this brand has gotten this year, taking so many steps back that they probably wont be able to recover.

Great Puma: Well it’s so bad that the WWE doesn’t seemed to phased at all by TNA’s blatant use of ECW the “Philadelphia Promotion”. You’d think they’d have a lawsuit in order.

Mascara De Fuego: TNA is so far behind the WWE right now, I don’t think they are phased by them. Hell, I think they feel more from ROH than TNA.

WWE signs ROH Champion Tyler Black

Great Puma: As you know from WrestleReunion I’m not the biggest Tyler Black fan. I think his ring-work is solid but I find myself twitching whenever he gets on the mic. I think it’s a good pickup and I think it’s important for them to have an IWC favorite on board for every NXT season. I’m sure he’ll be on NXT season 3 since Michael “Tool” Cole always needs someone to hate on. I’m hoping Tyler Black improves on his mic skills and takes the WWE by storm. Lord knows they need new faces and talent.

Mascara De Fuego: Yeah, we shall see. I am not impressed what they have done with former ROH Champions to this point and I don’t think Black is any different especially since he is not as solid as Lo-Ki or Danielson. Hopefully it works out for the guy but I not the biggest fan of his either.

Summerslam

Mascara De Fuego: Not a lot of matches announced so far.

Great Puma: True. But with a main event like Nexus vs Team WWE, the undercard can afford to be a little weak.

Mascara De Fuego: Seems like a throw back to days of old doesn’t it?

Great Puma: I’m looking forward to it. I’m hoping they put the Nexus over and through the atmosphere. 7 guys who have accomplished nothing are co-headlining a major pay per view. I think it’s the hottest angle we, the fans, have seen in a long time. The build up has been tremendous and I hope they make the match more about the WWE and not about Cena or any of the members of Team WWE.

Mascara De Fuego: I think it is extremely important that the Nexus gets over huge here. The WWE has finally woken up and realized that they NEED new stars and in a matter of months they took these rookies and turned them into a main event stable. I think its genius but it is important they survive on Sunday. Can they afford a few eliminations, sure. But I think it is key that Barrett, Sheffield and maybe one other guy survive and win the match.

Great Puma: Agreed. I’m sure the Nexus won’t win cleanly. I have a feeling the WWE team is eventually going to disintegrate and turn on each other. If they plant the seeds of a Jericho vs Edge feud for Wrestlemania 27 I will be a very happy wrestling mark.

Mascara De Fuego: I think the build up to this match has been great, even down to the final moments of this weeks RAW. If they could only pay this much attention to other angles…

Great Puma: They’ve done a pretty good job with Punk and Show. I’m not so keen with the direction the Vege-taker angle has taken. I want to see a Kane vs Undertaker feud as much as I wanted to see an ECW reunion PPV. I guess since I already saw one of those two things this year, Kane vs ‘Taker is gonna happen. DAMN IT!

Mascara De Fuego: Agreed. Taker vs. Kane for the millionth time is just as bad as Orton vs. Cena for the millionth time. There are so many guys on the roster for Taker to face. Shit, they’ve just scratched the surface on Punk vs. Taker. I guess the only thing good about Rey vs. Kane is that I guess Rey gets the title back on Sunday. I do hope the SES gets over strong. Losing a 3 on 1 match isn’t going to do shit to get this stable over.

Great Puma: True but with CM Punk’s injury I’m sure it’ll be more of Joseph Mathews and Luke doing the brunt of the work with Punk getting in some cheap shots. Hopefully I’m wrong and CM Punk’s elbow is healed enough so he can perform at full capacity. I’m good with either of the parties winning. Show and Punk are both capable of pulling off something amazing. I’m looking forward to that match as well.

Mascara De Fuego: What’s left on the card? Oh right, Orton vs. Sheamus. Eh, I don’t care either way and hope Miz cashes in on whoever wins.

Great Puma: True. I’d be surprised if they don’t have Miz cash in on Orton after Orton wins. I think that would be a great motivator for Orton to chase Miz and the title, which of course would be big business for the WWE. Since Orton’s character is still ‘rising’ in popularity I think it’s right for him to be in the chase right now instead of being the face of the company with the WWE title. Since the WWE is grooming Orton to be the next Stone Cold, I’d hold off a title run until Wrestlemania. I’m guessing Orton wins the Royal Rumble to set everything up.

Great Puma: Oh and what will Sheamus do in the meantime? I’m sure his buddy HHH will be ready to get in the ring after Linda McMahon wins the senate seat in November. The HHH vs Sheamus feud will live on.

Mascara De Fuego: I think Sheamus will end up being the 3rd person in the Orton vs. Miz feud until HHH McMahon gets back from his operation. I haven’t missed that dude at ALL and look forward to him taking MORE time to heal…

Great Puma: I actually think he’s taking time up to support Linda McMahon and her senate race. It doesn’t look good when your son-in-law is swinging sledgehammers at people.

Mascara De Fuego: and making dick jokes… sigh.

Ok I think that brings us to the end of another Wrap Up! Any last words Puma?

Great Puma: No last words for me, brother. I’m out like the love between @TNAnonymous and Dixie Carter!

Mascara De Fuego: Ok that will do it, I shall see you Saturday for the WWE Fan Axxess which we will be reporting on this weekend!  Until all are one!

Ring of Honor sues Ric Flair

January 30, 2010

According to Pwinsider.com, Ring of Honor has filed a lawsuit against Ric Flair, alleging that Flair owes the company over $40,000. The suit was filed this past Thursday in Bucks County, PA.

ROH says that Ric Flair was signed to make five appearances for the company, at $10,000 per appearance. Flair did not make the appearance in Montreal in July of 2009, and failed to repay the $10,000 that was paid to him for the event. Also, the suit alleges that Flair came to terms with the company to appear in an authority figure role on the ROH TV show. Flair was paid $35,000 for the TV appearances and only made one appearance. The second taping is when Flair showed up, and made a brief announcement to the crowd that he was resigning due to his relationship with WWE.

The belief was that Flair was going to use his relationship with ROH so that his son Reid could work there and continue his pro wrestling education. Those plans never happened, due to Reid being arrested on several drug charges last year. At this time, ROH has made no official comment on the deal.

The Royal Rumble stat pack – SLAM! Wrestling
Jon Waldman has some very cool Rumble stats over here.

This year will be the 12th Royal Rumbles each for Shawn Michaels and Kane. However, if you go by Glen Jacobs the person rather than his popular red monster character, he’s ahead of HBK by two Rumbles and is entering his 14th.

ROH at WrestleReunion Results

January 30, 2010

Decent crowd filled up the International Ballroom at the Hilton near LAX.  Lots of PWG chants.  Who knew people would treat ROH like Faker fans treat the Celtics?  Weird.  Anyways, on with the quick and dirty results:

1.  El Generico & Colt Cabana deafeated Scott Lost & Scorpio Sky via Colt 45 on Sky.  Great opener.  Some ridiculous double teams by Lost and Sky.  Cabana and Generico are always gold in their own right.

2.  Necro Butcher defeated Erick Stevens via roll up.  Joey Ryan interferes.  Both Embassy members gave Necro a post match beat down.  A “BUMP” road sign was involved.

3.  Roderick Strong over Delirious via powerbomb after a wicked back driver onto the ring apron edge.  Good match between both men.  Delirious was really gracious with the fans out in the lobby.

Official WrestleReunion Thoughts and Banter

January 29, 2010

So the two old men of FighterHayabusa.com took a break from porn and started instant messaging about WrestleReunion, more specifically the Ring of Honor card happening tonight around 8pm at the convention.  Here’s the discourse…

Mascara De Fuego: Puma, this weekend is WrestleReunion here in Los Angeles!

GreatPUMA: Word!

Mascara De Fuego: Since we both are attending this event, what are you most likely looking forward to?

GreatPUMA: Two words. Liger and Muta. Okay…well I guess it’s three with ‘and’.

Mascara De Fuego: Where is “and” from?…

GreatPUMA: Parts Unknown I think. That or Fresno.

Mascara De Fuego: Fresno!

Mascara De Fuego: anyhow…

Mascara De Fuego: Liger and Muta is my pick too but I am also looking forward to Stan Hansen!

GreatPUMA: Very true. He’s one of the last true cowboys left.

Thoughts on the ROH TV Title

January 25, 2010

Ring of Honor on HDNet

Watching ROH on HDnet has been a good alternative to WWE and TNA who more than ever are looking more as the same product. Although I have been enjoying ROH something was missing for me since the retirement of the ROH Pure Wrestling Title and that is a secondary singles title in the company.

Secondary singles titles have always been a staple of professional wrestling, numerous times these titles were used as the testing ground for bigger things in each Federation. A way to test out if a company could put the weight of the brand on your shoulders. Also, these wrestlers who would contend for these titles would steal the show away from the main event heavyweight title matches more often than not.

The WWF had the Intercontinental Title and the NWA/WCW had the United States Title. Both titles were used for the mid-card guys who would use the title to be elevated to the next level or build compelling stories around these titles.

Recently Ring of Honor announced they would be adding another singles title with the addition of the ROH Television Title. This could not have come at a better time. Ring of Honor has needed this addition since coming to HDnet. Although the Tag Team Titles and the World Title get defended on television it doesn’t happen very often. Now, don’t get me wrong this is refreshing as both the WWE and TNA do “go to the well” too many times with World Title matches week in and week out making it feel less special. ROH has needed a secondary title, something that could be defended more often without taking away from the World Title. Also, build wrestlers up the card without having to put them in the World Title picture without being tested. The Television Title will do that for Ring of Honor.

Historically the Television Title was defended frequently on television with a time limit which was usually between 10 to 20 minutes. Time limit draws were common but did give the champion another advantage in their title reigns which would lead to more matches against opponents.

Greats like Arn Anderson, Booker T, Tully Blanchard and Chris Benoit held the NWA/WCW version of the TV Title and although that title did end up being a joke towards the end its inception it was something to watch in its day.

I look forward to this addition to Ring of Honor and their programming and hope they bring back the legitimacy Television Titles once had.
