Christian and Orton put on another wrestling clinic

Quick Results

Kansas City, MO

  • CM Punk starts the episode off and is greeted by a superstar pop. Punk gets in a dig at John Cena, and compares the meaning of 4th of July and having his own independence. Punk nonchalantly labels himself a rebel and says he’s going to prove he can win the All Star Money in the Bank match despite the odds.
  • Alberto Del Rio comes out and talks about Dolph Ziggler and shits on the crowd. ADR keeps calling Smackdown “his show” and he and Punk start talking shit to each other. This brings out Teddy Long and puts them against each other in the main event.
  • Punk and Paul Heyman speak in the locker room. Heyman says Punk has nothing to gain from his main event match. Heyman also says that Punk needs him at the Money in the Bank pay per view. Punk asks him politely to stay out of his business.
  • The Usos defeat The Rhodes Scholars when both of them did a double splash from opposite corners on Damien Sandow.
  • The Shield cut a promo on the big screen. Seth Rollins belittles the Usos and talks about the Shield being more focused than ever. Roman Reigns tells them that they better bring a lot more than luck to beat them. Dean Ambrose guarantees that he’s going to be winning that Money in the Bank briefcase at the pay per view.
  • Alicia Fox pins Kaitlyn via roll up after Kaitlyn dropkicks AJ Lee off the apron.
  • The Bellas run into a paranoid AJ. They go all tweener and say that they’re going to get that Divas Championship. AJ runs into Big E, who makes fun of her being on edge. She screams at him to hurry up and go with her to the car to leave.
  • Christian and Randy Orton cut promos on each other backstage.
  • They rerun the Wyatt Family promo from RAW.
  • Randy Orton pins Christian via RKO
  • Teddy Long tells Paul Heyman to guest commentate on CM Punk’s main event. Heyman tries to get out of it but Long drops some of his own CM Punk-logic on Paul Heyman, who has a sudden change of heart.
  • Dolph Ziggler cuts a promo in the ring. He talks about his concussion and not being able to remember too much since then. Ziggler then piggy back on Punk’s promo and reiterates that the crowd never bought into ADR. He goes on to say he’s going to win at Money in the Bank.
  • Dolph Ziggler pins Drew McIntyre via Zig Zag and then avoids 3MB after the match.
  • Fandango pins Professor Fancy Hair Justin Gabriel via Super Legdrop
  • Zeb Colter, Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger cut a taped promo. Colter talks about the hypocrisy of the 4th of July and how one of them is going to win the Smackdown Money in the Bank match.
  • Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk wrestle to a double count out when Punk attacks Del Rio after Del Rio knocked Paul Heyman down. Punk gives Del Rio a GTS in the ring.
  • Punk goes on to check on Heyman’s well being after the match to end the show.

Highlights

Good opening segment. That was one of the most subdued CM Punk promos since his rise to superstardom. It was like watching a movie scene where one actor had so much gravity that the other actors involved just seemed transparent and one-dimensional. Alberto Del Rio was paper-thin here while Punk carried the segment.

Heyman and Punk continue to make things interesting with the smallest of exchanges. They really bring out the best in each other.

The Usos have a great finisher but it’s hard to watch the Rhodes Scholars be treated like Los Conquistadores.

The Shield promo was solid because of Dean Ambrose. Seth Rollins still comes off like a forced badguy that just went to intermediate promo class. I’m still not buying his persona. Reigns did okay and I did like the way he incorporated his emphatic “NO!” into his spiel. Ambrose brought it strong as usual, and it was nice to see him take a little bit of a delusional route when he said he was going to rule the world after he wins the Smackdown Money in the Bank briefcase.

The Kaitlyn-Alicia match was okay for what it was. It advanced the Kaitlyn-AJ feud and that’s about it. I love the Bella twins encounter in the back. I think the more contenders for the Divas title the better

I like how they’re giving the Wyatt Family a lot of attention. I really hope Bray Wyatt delivers and becomes a key part of the WWE’s future.

Christian vs. Orton was nice. They started early with slick counters of each other’s signature moves on the apron. Orton even showed a small addition to his moveset with a little fake out in the corner into a roll up. Cool. This wasn’t as great as their pay per view matches from a few years ago but it was pretty solid for a television match.

I wasn’t crazy about Ziggler’s promo, and I think he should just pop up and kick ADR’s ass from time to time until they have another match. Ziggler cutting promos just doesn’t play up to his strengths.

Ziggler vs. McIntyre never seemed to gel from the start. Ziggler had some interesting counters but the ending almost looked botched in a way. That being said, I’m looking forward to Ziggler vs. Heath Slater.

‘Dango vs. Gabriel was okay. The pace was refreshing to see because it forced Fandango to work at a constant and faster pace. Big ups to Justin Gabriel for making Fandango look better than he usually does.

The Colter promo was fine but I can’t help but think about how Cesaro was doing just fine on the mic when he was solo.

The main event was entertaining. Punk and ADR didn’t bring anything new to the match but they both definitely brought their A games. ADR got in a lot of offense including his signature springboard enzuigiri off the top rope. The best part of the main event segment was probably the end with Punk checking on a loopy and apologetic Heyman. Their chemistry is off the charts. Overall this was an entertaining episode of Smackdown with both main events delivering for their respective hours.
