The Rock comes back to Smackdown and Alberto Del Rio is your new World Heavyweight Champion

Quick Results

  • Booker T walks down to the ring and welcomes the crowd to the show. Booker says that he’s going to top last Monday’s RAW. He booked Orton vs. Cesaro, Big Show vs. Del Rio in a Last Man Standing match, and another visit by The Rock.

  • Big Show comes out and starts talking shit to Booker. Show claims that Booker is out to get him. Big Show gets racial and says that there are no Latino heroes or no Irish heroes. Big Show goes on to diss the crowd and threatens Booker T to change his mind. Alberto Del Rio comes out and backs Show out of the ring with a series kicks.

  • An Antonio Cesaro promo airs in a split screen that appears on his way to ring to face Randy Orton. Cesaro says that he’s going to take advantage of the opportunity to be in the Royal Rumble.

  • Randy Orton and Antonio Cesaro wrestle to a no-contest when The Shield attack Orton right before he was about to hit an RKO

  • The Shield punish Randy Orton and finish him off with a Shield Bomb.

  • Matt Striker interviews 3MB and they talk about percentages, Sheamus, and winning the Royal Rumble.

  • They cut to a taped promo of CM Punk in Sunlife Stadium with Paul Heyman. Punk says he’s a huge fan and puts on Rock’s old University of Miami jersey. Punk and Heyman make the point that this WWE isn’t the old WWE that Rock used to dominate. Punk then says that the Rock can never go ‘home.’

  • Matt Striker speaks to Alberto Del Rio in the locker room. ADR says he’s going to give Big Show a perfect picture of what ‘la familia’ means, and that he’s going to come out the World Heavyweight Champion.

  • AJ Lee & Dolph Ziggler defeat Natalya & The Great Khali when AJ pins Natalya after a very week Sliced Bread #2.

  • After the match Big E Langston clotheslines Khali, which is followed by a Dolph Ziggler famouser. Hornswoggle gets caught and destroyed by Big E’s Running Shoulder Cutter.

  • They cut back to Punk’s promo at Sunlife Stadium. Punk says that he’s better than ‘the people’ and he’s better than the Rock. Heyman reiterates that the Rock is not going to ride in the Royal Rumble a hero and walk out wearing the WWE Championship. CM Punk then just drops the Rock’s jersey on the ground.

  • Lilian Garcia introduces the Rock to a humongous pop. He takes his time walking to the ring and standing on the second rope in the corners giving his signature fist and the University of Miami hand sign.

  • The Rock says, “Finally, the Rock has come backā€¦ home.” He introduces Flo Rida and then says how disappointed he was to find out that CM Punk did not show up. Big “Cookie Puss” chant starts. He talks about Warren Sapp and Ray Lewis and how everything the Rock has accomplished has started in Miami. The Rock says that he’s going to kick CM Punk’s cookie puss ass at the Royal Rumble.

  • The Rock is interrupted by Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes. Sandow introduces himself and Cody Rhodes. Sandow says that they’re out to say that the Rock deserves to be champion and they do. Cody then threatens the Rock to get out of the ring. The Rock says that Cody has a dead caterpillar on his lip. The Rock riffs some more on Cody’s mustache and Cody says, “I am an adult and if he wants to grow a mustache, he’ll grow a mustache!”

  • Sandow invites the Rock to answer 3 questions in order to stay. The Rock gets the first two questions right followed by ‘BITCH.” The Rock says that Sandow looks like a baby from created by a Gremlin and Abe Lincoln. The Rock then says he’s going to ask Sandow a question. The Rock’s question is “what do you get when you combine a geological aggregate of minerals with its lowest form?” Sandow answers with “Rock Bottom” which is then followed by the Rock’s Rock Bottom.

  • The Rock turns to Cody. Cody gets amped and rushes the Rock and is blasted by a spinebuster. Rock hits the People’s Elbow and ends the segment with his catchphrase.

  • Sheamus deafest 3MB in a handicap match when he pins Heath Slater with a Brogue Kick

  • Team Hell No defeat The Primetime Players when Kane pins Darren Young via Chokeslam

  • Alberto Del Rio defeats The Big Show in a Last Man Standing Match to become the new World Heavyweight Champion

  • Alberto won via countout after he hit the Big Show with steel steps 3 times and covering him with the announcers table

  • The opening segment was one of the best opening segments in a long time. It was short, to the point, it featured some action, and it set up the tone for the rest of the show.
  • Orton vs. Cesaro was going good but nothing entertains me more than a Shield beatdown.
  • I think 3MB are shit because they remind me of a band that doesn’t try so hard to be cool. Drew, Jinder and Heath look like they’re having the time of their lives.
  • Punk’s taped promo was solid. I liked how he tied in the history of the old Orange Dome being demolished and how the WWE isn’t the same place the Rock wrestled during his era. Solid points all around but it still doesn’t make me root more for CM Punk in any way shape or form.
  • This wasn’t Alberto Del Rio’s longest, nor exaggerated promo, but it was certainly one of his best. He gave the crowd a little nibble to pop for and then hit it home with his overall tone and delivery.
  • I can’t really comment on the AJ-Ziggler mixed gender match but I like it when a heel truly heels it up like Big E dropping Hornswoggle.
  • CM Punk’s video promos tonight were some of the best promos he’s ever done in his current heel persona. They’re matching the Rock’s energy and charisma step for step with plain honesty and grit. This serve as a blueprint for promo’s in today’s pro wrestling industry.
  • The Rock was the Rock, which means he was great as usual. The star of this whole segment was really Cody Rhodes. Cody’s reactions were spot on and hilarious. I hope we get to see this side of Cody Rhodes more often. There’s just too much personality there to hide.
  • I do think The Rock should tidy up his promos a bit and come a little more serious when he’s face to face with CM Punk. The humorous stuff might work in Miami but I have feeling the Rock might get eaten up in the pro-CM Punk states.
  • It’s really difficult to watch a Mega Sheamus match. It’s hard to invest in “Sheamus dominates, opponent gets a little offense in, Sheamus wins.”
  • Team Hell No-PTP was a very quick match. I liked that they played up Daniel Bryan’s knee injury from the last Raw.
  • This Miami crowd made a good Del Rio-Big Show match into a great encounter for the ages. There were too many great moments to mention, but I loved ADR’s cross arm breaker on Show’s arm over the ropes. Also, have you ever seen Big Show dropkicked through a standing table? Neither have I. Big Show’s spear on ADR through the barrier was just as sick. The crowd’s pop when ADR got himself up before the 10 count added to the excitement.
  • Overall this may be the best Smackdown that 2013 has to offer. It had the Rock, incredible CM Punk promos, a Shield Beatdown, and a great World Title match that featured a title change. Alberto Del Rio’s celebration in the crowd was amazing to see, and Sheamus’s in-ring time was kept to a minimum, which also adds value to any Smackdown. I’m not sure how they’re going to top this episode. We have the rest of 2013 to find out.
