Smackdown Thoughts & Review [August 24, 2012]

Oops! Alberto Del Rio did it again.

Bakersfield, CA

Randy Orton comes down to the ring. Decent “Randy” chant. He says that he deserves to face Sheamus for the World Heavyweight Title. Orton invites anybody who has a problem with that.

This brings Sheamus out. Sheamus agrees with Orton and starts shitting on Alberto Del Rio. Sheamus says he wants Orton to face him.

In comes Booker T to a loud pop. Booker says that Orton is always going to be a perennial contender.

Alberto Del Rio, followed by Ricardo Rodriguez, interrupts the conversation. ADR says that this is a conspiracy and runs down Sheamus and Orton.

Booker T makes a number one contender match between Alberto Del Rio and Randy Orton.

~ I like Alberto Del Rio. I like watching him wrestle a lot. However, something is not clicking with his character. He needs a tweak or two and I feel like he’s just right at the level of being a superstar heel. I’m not sure what it is and you have any ideas feel free to post them below.

Also Ricardo Rodriguez rocks it again. His mannerisms were hilarious.

Ryback pins Jinder Mahal via Running Samoan Drop

~ This was decent. It was nice to see a Ryback opponent get a lot more offense in. Ryback sold well and the match picked up when Mahal was on the offensive. I like that the crowds are beginning to chant “Feed Me More” before his finisher. I feel like that adds a lot to his matches. I think Ryback is catching on a little more this episode.

Kaitlyn came down to do some guest commentating.

WWE Divas champ Layla pins Alicia Fox via Head Kick

  • After the match, Kaitlyn and Layla shake hands and hug. Eve Torres comes down, looks at them awkwardly, and then lifts both of their hands in victory. Layla and Kaitlyn look at her a little confused.

~ Oh Kaitlyn. She can do no wrong. Anyways, this was a decent and short match. Alicia has improved so much over the years and she hit a sick little dropkick and a lovely Half Crab. Layla was solid as usual. I really wonder if they’re going to put Kaitlyn over and give her the title. As much as I love title changes, I think it’s too soon to put the title on Kaitlyn. I’d like to see her put in a serious feud over a few months and see how she performs in longer matches.

Dolph Ziggler and Vicky Guerrero talk a little bit about Chris Jericho and his Money In the Bank Briefcase. Sheamus buts in and starts talking shit and tells Ziggler to cash in tonight. Ziggler tells him that he’s going to cash in on his own terms and when he does, Sheamus won’t know it.

Teddy Long stops by and makes a non-title match between Ziggler and Sheamus.

~ So far, Ziggler is one of the most interesting storylines in WWE right now. Perhaps he should cash in at the Survivor Series.

Cody Rhodes joins the announcing team.

Heath Slater pins Sin Cara via Reverse DDT after Cody Rhodes interferes and tries to take Sin Cara’s mask

  • After the match Cody comes in and attacks Sin Cara. He tries to take the mask again but the refs pulled him away.

~ Okay match. Sin Cara hit some cool spots. I’m disappointed with the direction of Cody Rhodes’s character. I thought he would have moved up in opponents after he feuded with Rey Mysterio and Christian. Cody seems to be back in the lower mid card again. It’s a shame.

WWE World champion Sheamus defeats Dolph Ziggler via DQ when Ziggler blasts Sheamus with the briefcase

  • After the match, Ziggler almost cash in but Sheamus recovered too quickly.

~ Good match. Dolph was great as usual and he made Sheamus look like a beast. So what’s going to put Sheamus away? Will he eventually get a match with Orton and kick out of three RKOs? It wouldn’t surprise me.

Santino is in the ring. He talks about remembering what it’s like to be American since he lost the United States Title. Santino tries to get sympathy from the crowd but the crowd is silent. He starts talking to the Cobra and makes the crowd laugh. Santino blames the Cobra but then gives it a pep talk with a Rocky 4 quote.

Antonio Cesaro and Aksana come out. Cesaro says “winner’ in his 5 different languages. Santino walks up the ramp and goes to town on Cesaro. Aksana distracts the Cobra and Cesaro knocks Santino down.

~ Okay. Let’s finish this feud so we can bring the US Title back to prominence with a serious and meaningful feud.

The Primetime Players sit at the announcing table.

WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston & R-Truth defeat Epico and Primo via R-Truth’s What’s Up on Primo

~ Decent tag team match. All four these guys can wrestle and it’s sad to see them wasted in the tag team division.

Matt Stryker interviews Kofi Kingston, R-Truth, and Lil Jimmy. R-Truth says they’re not sweating the competition, the competition sweats them. The Primetime Players, the Usos, Primo and Epico, and Tyson Kidd and Justin Gabriel all butt in and start jawing at each other. All the tag teams start brawling until the refs broke up the pier six brawl.

~ I hope this leads to something for the tag team division.

Booker T asks Teddy Long on who he thinks should be the number one contender to the tag team titles. Teddy Long seems unsure and can’t come up with an answer right away. Eve Torres hands Booker T a report of all the WWE tag teams and Booker’s organized schedule. Booker praises her and leaves. Eve tells Teddy that she didn’t notice him standing there.

Alberto Del Rio submits Randy Orton via Cross Arm Breaker

  • After the match, ADR threw Ricardo’s show at Sheamus. ADR and Ricardo get the upper hand and ADR smashes Ricardo’s other shoe on Sheamus’s head. Meanwhile, Orton sells his injured arm.
  • Ziggler threatens to cash in the briefcase again but Randy Orton rocks him with a RKO.

~ Great match. The finish was sick as Alberto Del Rio locked in the Cross Arm Breaker that flowed out of what looked like a modified Oklahoma Roll. Very dope. I liked how Orton tried to stop the submission by grabbing his hand in trouble with the other hand.

What’s really cool is that there used to be a time when Randy Orton was booked the way Sheamus is being booked now. It was a joy to see Orton actually tap out and I actually think he’s easier to root for Orton than Sheamus. It’s nice to see the top tier wrestlers lose once in a while. A clean Sheamus loss can’t come soon enough.
