Smackdown Live: The Great American Bash [July 3, 2012]

by

Cody Rhodes and Dolph Ziggler put on clinics. Damien Sandow hates barbecues. Happy 4th of July!

They open with a 4th of July party in the back. Natalya is talking to Yoshi Tatsu about Bret Hart and they pan to Hornswoggle splashing in a kiddie pool, surrounded by Rosa Mendes, Kaitlyn and Tamina. Teddy Long welcomes the group and says that Eve Torres, sporting her giant nametag, is going to clean up the mess. Santino tries to start a fire on the grill but ends up failing. Enter Kane who lights it up with his pyrokinetic powers. Hilarious.

~ I love shit like this. This reminds me of CM Punk’s idea of the WWE making a remake of Canonball Run with WWE superstars. I always enjoy seeing pro wrestlers in non-wrestling environments. All the divas looked lovely but Natalya stole the show with her mega mini skirt deal. Damnnn.

Ricardo Rodriguez introduces Alberto Del Rio. ADR gets on the mic and says he’s not celebrating America but he’s going to celebrate his title shot. ADR then accuses most of the crowd of being illegal aliens. He walks around the ring and asks a few fans for their “papers.” One fan talks back to ADR and before he can do anything Sheamus comes out. Sheamus beats them toward the stage but ADR and Ricardo get the upper hand. Ricardo convinces ADR to slam a Rolls Royce car hood onto Sheamus’ back.

~ It’s rare to see someone beat down Sheamus. The hood shots were brutal and I hope ADR beats Sheamus at Money in the Bankā€¦but I doubt that will happen.

Layla & The Great Khali defeat Aksana & Antonio Cesaro via Layla’s Rude Awakening Neckbreaker on Aksana

~ Layla makes a lot of the WWE divas look extremely average. This was what it was. I’m sure the kids in attendance were happy. As much as I want Cesaro to succeed I’m not sure if his current gimmick and storyline are helping him stand out.

Money in the Bank Qualifying Match
Cody Rhodes defeats Christian via Cross Rhodes

~ This was excellent. Cody seemed to have Christian’s number for the most part. I liked their counters a lot and they seem to have great chemistry. The Smackdown Money it in the Bank match is going to bananas. I wouldn’t mind seeing these Cody and Christian in a best of 7 series.

They cut back to the 4th of July barbecue. Zack Ryder asks Teddy Long to be the DJ. Heath Slater starts talking shit but gets booed out of the party. Zack plays Brodus Clay’s theme music, the Funkadactyls and Brodus enter the scene, and everybody starts dancing.

Money in the Bank Qualifying Match
Dolph Ziggler defeats Alex Riley via Zig Zag

~ Good, short match. Riley has improved a lot since his NXT year. Dolph is Dolph and I look forward to his performing in the Smackdown MITB match.

Santino, Sgt. Slaughter & Hacksaw Jim Duggan defeat Hunico, Camacho & Drew McIntyre via COBRA on Hunico

~ This was short and fun. Hunico is quickly becoming a cholo Trent Barreta, stuck in the lower mid-card. Give that man a push!

Damien Sandow ruins the barbecue and starts talking shit. Zack Ryder stands up to him. Sandow gets on his soapbox and starts preaching about our founding fathers. Ryder tells him to leave. Sandow attacks him, Ryder fights him off and accidentally throws punch on Eve Torres.

~ If this was the Attitude Era the punch would have been beer and Eve would have been in a white t-shirt and not much else.

Ryback kills Curt Hawkins with Tyler Reks via Running Samoan Drop

~ Ryback smash. That is all.

20-Man Battle Royal for the right to be Smackdown GM next week
Zack Ryder wins by eliminating Kane

  • Big Show eliminated John Cena and Christian. The Final four were Ziggler, Show, Kane and Zack Ryder. Kane kicked Show and Christian over the top rope near the end.
  • Kane dominated most of the final few moments but Ryder managed to pull the ropes down to eliminate a charging Kane.

~ This was decent by battle royal standards. I liked that Big Show eliminated Cena to add to their feud and storyline. Good for Ryder but is it too little too late? I hope this leads to a better direction for Zack.

This was a mildly entertaining episode of Smackdown. The Cody Rhodes and Dolph Ziggler victories are worth checking out.
