Smackdown Thoughts & Review [October 7, 2011]

Beth is given her first squash. The Battle of the Sin Caras continues. How does the Raw walk out effect Smackdown? Big Show returns and so much more!

Biloxi, MS

They show a video recap of the Triple H walk out from Raw. Funny how the WWE was all about CM Punk a few months ago but is now all about Triple H.

They cut to Teddy Long in a Steve Harvey suit speaking on the phone with Triple H. He tells Zack Ryder that Triple H has left Smackdown in his hands for the night.

Vicky is in the ring and announces the one year anniversary of Smackdown on SyFy. Most of the same wrestlers that walked out on Raw are in the ring. Christian, David Otunga and company take turns running down Triple H. They threaten to leave the company if Triple H is not removed as COO of Raw.

In the midst of all that, there was a decent “Triple H” chant.

Alberto Del Rio comes down to the ring.

  • ADR says he’s there to show the world what they’re going to be missing.

Teddy Long comes out and announces two matches – Christian & Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton & Sheamus, and Alberto Del Rio vs. Sin Cara.

Alberto Del Rio submits Sin Cara

  • ADR counters Sin Cara’s Handspring Elbow with a sick Release German. Really dope NOAH-ish head bump by Sin Cara. Ouch.
  • ADR tries pulling off the mask but lets it go.
  • Sin Cara gets some offense in but ADR hooks on the Cross Arm Breaker for the tappy tap.
  • After the match, Sin Hunico comes out, works on the injured arm and flattens him with the Swanton.

~ Nice short match. Sin Cara got some solid offense in and both men flowed with the little time they had together. I hope they have a rematch with a lot more time so we can see how well they gel together.

They cut to Matt Striker interviewing Air Boom.

  • Air Boom declare that they’re not going to be on Raw, but they will be on Smackdown.

Non Title WWE Tag Team Match
Jack Swagger & Dolph Ziggler defeat Air Boom

  • Air Boom are attacked before they enter the ring.
  • Ziggler and Swagger destroy Air Boom on the outside for at least half the match’s broadcast time.
  • Crowd busts out with a “Vicky Sucks” chant. Number 2 heel in the business…at least.
  • Evan Bourne gets tagged in, gets some offense in but is Gutwrenched Powerbombed by Swagger for the loss.

~ Decent match. Hopefully these two teams with have a clean match that goes beyond the 10-minute mark in the future. There are way too many good wrestlers involved for this feud not to be good.

Divas Champion Beth Phoenix pinned Alicia Fox

  • Fox got a second of offense in before being destroyed by the Glam Slam.
  • After the match, Natalya puts Fox in that killer submission while Beth holds the mic in front of her so the crowd can hear her scream.

~ This is how it should be in the Divas division for a while. No complaints here.

Big Show returns

  • Big Show says he was humbled by Mark Henry. Show then demands a title match with Mark Henry.

Mark Henry comes out and says Show hasn’t done anything but sit at home for four months. Henry says he’ll let Show know on his own terms aka “World Heavyweight Championship Time.”

  • An irate Big Show says he’s going to chokeslam Mark Henry through a table and break his ankle if he doesn’t get an answer by the end of the episode.

~ Nice “Let’s go Big Show” chant from the crowd. Nice return and strong promo from the big man. Loved that got himself and Mark Henry over in a huge way. That’s how it’s done, people.

Unfortunately, I still think Mark Henry should get the best of him in the rematch. Big Show is and will forever be over with or without the title. I still think the best of Mark Henry is yet to come and I think the title should be around his waist at least until the Royal Rumble.

Randy Orton Promo

  • He says that if he has a problem with Triple H he’ll just deal with him personally. Orton also says he doesn’t play well with others and that he’s never been into following the “group.” He’s going to beat Christian and Cody tonight.

They show a Brodus Clay promo. Please bring Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins up soon please.

Ezekial Jackson submits Jinder Mahal

  • Jinder Mahal is in the ring but is interrupted by Ezekial Jackson.
  • Jackson tells him to be quiet and then pummels him down.
  • Jinder gets some offense in but Jackson puts him up in the Torture Rack and it’s over.

~ I’ve never seen someone tap out on someone’s head. Cool. Build Ezekial Jackson up slowly like they should have done in the first place.

John Laurinaitis meets with Teddy Long

  • JL blows smoke up Teddy’s ass and says how crucial Smackdown’s success is to the WWE.

~ The WWE continues to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. A year ago, John Laurinaitis was a WWE insider name that you only read about in dirt sheets and shoot interviews. He’s now on the verge of being the biggest heel in the pro wrestling industry. Job well done, WWE.

Hornswaggle comes out and trades Spinnaroonie’s with Booker T to the crowd’s delight.

Randy Orton & Sheamus def. Christian & Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes

  • Sheamus set them up and Orton knocked them down.
  • Orton is tagged in and cleans house.
  • Christian and Cody work together a manage to get a sprinkle of offense in.
  • Orton ducks a Cody clothesline and pulls him down with a sick RKO for the win.

~ Almost a squash for Sheamus and Orton. When the WWE wants to protect their inner-circle of favorites, they certainly aren’t subtle about it. I don’t think feuds should be called feuds if the heels are treated like glorified jobbers. I guess Cody and Christian can consider themselves stepping stones for Orton and Sheamus.

Mark Henry answers the Big Show

  • Mark Henry says he isn’t giving Big Show a title shot.
  • Huge “Big Show” chant.
  • Show comes out and stomps a mudhole in Henry in the corner.
  • Show is held back by a bunch of refs but spears Mark Henry anyways.
  • Henry heads up the ramp with the title and Show chases him down.
  • Show and Henry battle around the ring.
  • Henry clears off the announcers table but Big Show catches him and chokeslams him through the table!
  • Teddy Long comes out to diffuse the situation and grants Show a title match but Show blasts Henry with a chair as the show ends.

~ Very exciting ending to a decent Smackdown. I definitely want to know what happens next but I’m not particularly excited with the other storylines in the WWE right now. It’s almost as if almost everything revolves around the Triple H-COO situation.

Will next week’s Raw feature the debut of FCW wrestlers since most of the Roster has threatened to walk out? Just a random thought but I think it would be interesting. Who the hell am I kidding. Oh well. I don’t think Orton, Sheamus, Punk, Cena and the Big Show can carry a two hour show by themselves. You would think they could use a supporting cast.
