Smackdown Thoughts & Review [7. 29. 11]

Philly! John Morrison and R-Truth invade Smackdown! Zack Ryder sighting! AJ does a sick Shining Wizard and so much more!

Chief Operating Officer, Triple H, is introduced.

  • Triple H mimics McMahon’s walk for a bit and enters the ring and addresses the crowd.
  • Triple H says he’s going to start at the top and work his way down. He discusses the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship.
  • He says he resigned CM Punk late Monday night. Death of a great angle.

The Man with the Worst T-Shirt Ever, Christian, interrupts Triple H.

  • Christian congratulates Triple H on his new position. He complains about Teddy Long and Randy Orton.
  • Christian says Triple H would like a close working relationship with him.
  • Triple H dismisses him and says he won’t tolerate what Vince did.
  • Triple H took Christian’s interruption as an insult.
  • Triple H makes Randy Orton vs. Christian at Summerslam in a No Holds Barred match.

Christian starts to protest and R-Truth interrupts.

  • Truth says he’s glad to be back on Smackdown.
  • Truth tells Triple H that all of the conspiracies against him better be over by the next Raw episode.

Triple H makes R-Truth vs. Orton for tonight.

Triple H also makes Christian vs. John Morrison next.

  • Triple H speaks with Teddy Long and Zack Ryder
  • Ryder says he can’t help it if they don’t realize he’s the Internet Champion
  • Triple H tells Teddy that Ryder is his new assistant

World Heavyweight Champion Christian pins John Morrison

  • Bret Hart Morrison places his glasses on some kid’s face.
  • Morrison hits a Springboard Roundhouse for two.
  • Morrison catches Christian off guard with a Pescado to the outside!
  • Awkward moment where it looked like Morrison couldn’t pick Christian up.
  • Textbook Spinebuster for two by Christian.
  • The announcers claim that Morrison’s neck isn’t 100%.
  • Morrison pulls off a Standing Flux Capacitor/Spanish Fly for a close two! Holy Shit! Dooooope!
  • Christian hits a Spear for two!
  • Christian smashes the back of Morrison’s neck on the top rope and then hits the Killswitch for the Win.

~ Three sets of two words each: Excellent match. Good shit. More please.

They show Jinder Mahal and the Great Khali watching from a luxury suite.

Wade Barrett is in the ring with a mic.

  • He says he joined the WWE to make a lot of money.
  • He then says Daniel Bryan is overrated.
  • HUGE DANIEL BRYAN chant! Big ups to Philly for that!
  • He says Greed is terribly underrated.
  • He continues to run down Daniel Bryan.

Daniel Bryan interrupts.

  • TOOL does his schtick as Bryan walks toward the ring.
  • Daniel Bryan says he’s going to main event Wrestlemania and then Wade gives him a big boot to the face.
  • Wade bends down to talk shit and Bryan grabs his arm and puts him in Lebell Lock.

  • Zack Ryder is talking Teddy Long’s ear off.
  • Mark Henry walks in and Teddy says that nobody wants to deal with him.
  • Zack says he’ll find Henry an opponent.

~ I’d rather see Zack Ryder getting over in the ring but I guess this ‘assistant’ gig is better than no Zack Ryder at all.

Rihanna Alicia Fox, Tamina & Rosa Mendes defeat Natalya, Kaitlyn & A.J. via pinfall

  • Tamina and Natalya start off with a clinic. Good wrestling from both ladies.
  • AJ is tagged in and pulls off a nice Headscissors and then does a very hard Shining Wizard!
  • Rihanna Alicia Fox dodges AJ’s Springboard Cross Body and then hits the Scissors Kick for the win.

~ I hope Tamina and Natalya have more matches with each other in the future. Their opening moments were a joy to watch. I’m a little sad that Kaitlyn didn’t get any ring time but it was nice to see AJ get some ring time to do her thing. Decent match and I must add that Alicia Fox doesn’t look as green anymore. There was definite improvement from what I saw in her brief moment of action.

Mark Henry destroys Bobby Howard, a local wrestler

  • The announcer has to introduce Howard twice before he reluctantly comes out.
  • Henry destroys him and hits the World’s Strongest Slam for the win.
  • Post match, Henry grabs a chair from the outside and threatens to injure Howard with hit.
  • Teddy Long runs down and tries to convince him to stop.
  • Sheamus comes out to a decent pop. Face turn?
  • Sheamus relates an old Irish fairy tale to Mark Henry.
  • Huge Sheamus chant. Really?
  • Sheamus slaps Mark Henry, Henry rushes him and Sheamus pulls down the ropes to send Henry falling outside. Henry tries to come back in but Sheamus scares him off with a chair.

~ This is as good of a face turn as I’ve ever seen one. Sheamus comes out like Lex Luger to confront Mark Henry’s Yokozuna. Unfortunately, I still think Mark Henry should be given a run at the top. I hope this isn’t used as a push for Sheamus’ face run and more of another stepping-stone for Mark Henry’s monster streak to the top.

WWE Tag Team Champions Michael McGillicutty & David Otunga defeat The Usos in a WWE Tag Team Championship Match via pinfall

  • The Usos do their Haka dance entrance. Love that shit. I wonder if they’ll allow Samoa Joe to do it as well if he ever signs with WWE?
  • Otunga and McGillicutty come out to some odd choral music. Weird.
  • Nice double team elbow by the Usos for two.
  • Otunga pushes one off the top rope, which enables McGillicutty to hit his Rolling Neckbreaker for the win.

  • Zack Ryder tells Teddy Long that he made Ezekial Jackson vs. Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.
    R-Truth Interview
  • Truth says he’s going to be a bunch of eagles swooping down on a snake.

~ Right now, Truth is probably one of the most entertaining character evolutions in years. I hope he gets rewarded.

Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase defeat Intercontinental Champion Ezekiel Jackson in a 2-on-1 Handicap Match via pinfall

  • Ted and Cody do a lot of double team distraction tactics to control the match early.
  • Cody dodges Ezekial as he rams his shoulder into the post, Cross Rhodes, and it’s over.

~ Cody wins? Good. I like Big Zeke a lot but we all know Cody has paid a lot more dues. I hope this is the beginning of a bigger push for Cody.

The camera cuts to Jinder and Khali in their luxury suite. They some gibberish to the crowd and the crowd boos.

R-Truth defeats Randy Orton by DQ

  • Truth hits a Suplex Stunner for two.
  • Christian looks on from the entrance.
  • Good back and forth match from both men. R-Truth is getting in a lot of his offense.
  • The match goes to the outside and Christian distracts the ref while R-Truth hits Orton with a bottle of water.
  • Orton grabs a chair and hits Truth for the DQ loss.
  • Randy RKOs Truth on the table as the show goes ends.

~ Decent match for what it was. Truth looked great despite the finish post-match drubbing. I liked the undercard a lot more than the main event. Seeing Truth in the main was refreshing but typical WWE booking ruined any chance of something interesting from happening. I’ll be very disappointed if Orton regains the title at Summerslam. I think people would pay to see Christian being pummeled every night only to barely escape with the title.

The Sheamus face turn was probably the biggest moment from this episode. I’m not sure if this is going to be a one-off type of deal where Sheamus is a face solely for this feud with Mark Henry or if he’s going to be face for a while. I think a face Sheamus would be a great contender for Christian’s title run. I just hope they give Henry a run at the title first.

Decent show overall. The Morrison match at the beginning of the show and AJ’s Shining Wizard were key highlights to me.
