Smackdown Thoughts & Review [7. 8. 11]

Mark Henry continues his bad assery! A Tyson Kidd sighting! Sheamus is Irish! AJ wins a match and so much more!

Tuscon, AZ

They show last week’s contact signing fiasco involving Sheamus, Christian and Randy Orton.

The Smackdown Money in the Bank participants, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, Cody Rhodes, Wade Barrett, Daniel Bryan, Kane, and Sin Cara are in the ring with Josh Mathews.

  • Daniel Bryan says he’s both excited and a little nervous. Being world champion has been his dream since he was a little kid. It’s worth the risk that he’s going to take. Cody Rhodes snatches the mic and calls him a common man.
  • Cody then goes on to talk about how he’s an exceptional person blah blah blah.
  • Wade says he’s the shit and that he’s achieved more than his competitors.

Sheamus bumrushes the ring with a steel chair, clears the ring and manages to blast Wade Barrett’s back.

Sheamus grabs a mic.

  • He says he’s going to win the MITB match and then he’s going to cash in that night and become champion.

Christian comes out.

Christian calls him Ronald McDonald. He says he’s stupid and insinuates that he can’t read a contract.

Teddy Long comes and grants Sheamus a non-title match with Randy Orton.

~ Decent segment that promoted two pay per view matches in one sitting. Glad that Daniel Bryan got some time on the mic before the ruckus started.

Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase defeat Ezekial Jackson & Daniel Bryan

  • Byran hits a lovely suicide dive on Cody and Ted outside.
  • Bryan destroys Cody with his kicks in the corner.
  • Zeke is tagged in and kills Ted with power moves.
  • Zeke has Ted in the torture rack but is blasted in the face by Cody’s Beautiful Disaster kick.
  • Ted follows up with Dream Street and its over, son.

~ Good match for what it was. Not sure if the cheers for Ezekial were real or canned. He did a good job of getting the crowd into his moves for the match. Daniel Bryan was Daniel Bryan – excellent.

Matt Striker asks Mark Henry about his actions last week. Henry just stares him down and Matt wisely scurries away.

Jinder Mahal pins Trent Barreta

  • Great Khali joins the announcing team. For real.
  • Trent took a sick bump off a very high back body drop onto the turnbuckles.
  • Jinder pulls off his Full Nelson Slam and it’s over.
  • After the match Jinder hits another Full Nelson Slam on Trent.

~ Another squash to the nice and slow build of Jinder. I hope they put him in a worthwhile feud soon. It would be nice to see if he can go in the ring for more than two minutes.

Todd Grisham asks Sheamus about his recent rampage. Sheamus says “It’s an Irish thing fella, you wouldn’t understand.”

AJ pins Tamina

  • Tamina dominates early with her strength and size.
  • Very sick running hip/booty attack by Tamina to AJ’s head in the corner.
  • HUGE AJ chant from the crowd!
  • Dope Shining Wizard by AJ for two! Very dope. I think I’m turned on.
  • AJ dodges Tamina’s Stinger Splash, rolls her up and it’s over!

After the match Rihanna Alicia Foxx gives Tamina shit about losing her match. Tamina looks furious.

~ Good match for what it was. Glad AJ won. I look forward to Tamina’s face turn. I always thought she was over when Tamina was with Santino. I still say they should have her do her own version of the Cobra.

Mark Henry pins Kane

  • Nice start with Kane trying to knock Mark down with clotheslines.
  • Kane starts going all lucha with sick running low dropkick to a kneeling Mark Henry.
  • Mark catches Kane off the top and slams him with a Belly to Belly takedown for two.
  • Mark counters Kane’s chokeslam by pulling Kane’s arm down with brute force and headbutting Kane’s shoulder.
  • Kane wiggles out the back of Mark’s World’s Strongest Slam and gets off a chokeslam for a close two!
  • Mark rams Kane’s back into the ring apron and a steel post.
  • Mark bombs Kane’s body with a running splash for two.
  • Mark drops Kane with the World’s Strongest Slam and it’s over.

After the match Mark Henry starts talking shit to Booker T at the announcing table. Henry empties Booker’s water bottle out.

~ Kudos for Kane for making Mark Henry look like a legit World Championship contender. I can’t say enough about Kane’s ability to sell the hell out of every move and attack by Mark Henry.

I hope Mark Henry defeats the Big Show at Money in the Bank and is given a run at the World Title he deserves.

Orton is interviewed. He says he’s going to have to beat Sheamus in the future so he might as well face him now.

Sin Cara defeats Tyson Kidd

  • Nice mat and chain wrestling from both men at the start.
  • Nice tilt-a-whirl armdrag by Cara.
  • Kidd gets some nice offense in, including a sick running dropkick to the side of Cara’s head.
  • Cara counters Kidd’s Springboard Flying Elbow with his knees up.
  • Cara catches Kidd at the top and hits the Flying Wallendas / Spanish Fly for the win.

~ It’s a shame that someone with Tyson Kidd’s lineage is not getting a huge push. I will take Tyson Kidd over Sin Cara any day of the week.

Even with a sound worker in Kidd, the match was a bit sloppy. They can push Sin Cara to the moon and give him the UCLA Bruin lighting treatment but it won’t matter until he’s able to tighten things up in the ring. It’s difficult to root for somebody when their offense comes off more sloppy than exhilarating.

Matt Striker asks Teddy Long if he’s intimidated by Mark Henry. Long pauses for a moment and walks away.

The Uso Brothers defeat Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater

  • The Usos come out with the greatest entrance in the WWE.
  • Nice falling neckbreaker by Slater.
  • The Usos pull off a Superplex followed a Top Rope Splash combo for the duke.

After the match, Slater and Gabriel bicker.

~ Good for the Usos. I wouldn’t mind them being tag champs sometime soon. They’re the only tag team that ‘looks’ and wrestles like a tag team. I hope the Kings of Wrestling rumors are true.

Idiom Boy, Johnny Curtis promo.

He’s going to ‘take the cake’ when he debuts. Lord.

Randy Orton defeats Shemaus via DQ

  • Christian comes out to ringside to watch the match.
  • Sheamus controls most of the match.
  • Sheamus misses a Brogue kick and then counters an RKO.
  • Orton manages to get his Inverted Neck Breaker off and teases an RKO.
  • Christian runs in and starts pummeling Orton from the mount and the ref rings the bell.
  • Sheamus pulls Christian and hits him with the Brogue Kick.
  • Orton suprises Sheamus with an RKO to end the show.

~ Good match but the idea of Sheamus and Orton wrestling the main event on my TV ruins my appetite for Smackdown. I’m just over seeing the same two to three faces in the final hour.

We have one more Smackdown until Money in the Bank and I actually feel like the Mark Henry and the World Title storylines are at fully developed. The only pay per view storyline that isn’t developed is the Smackdown Money in the Bank match. I imagine they’ll be highlighting all the MITB participants on next week’s episode.
