Smackdown 600th Episode Thoughts & Review [2. 18. 11]

600th Episode!

They show clips from yesteryear and hype the huge 12-man tag team main event.

They also hype some New World Title Coronation for Dolph Ziggler. Huh?

San Diego, CA

12 Man Tag Team Main Event
Edge, Randy Orton, John Morrison, R-Truth, Rey Mysterio & John Fruity Pebbles
CM Punk, Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Drew McIntyre, Kane & Dolph Ziggler

  • Rey comes out in a San Diego Chargers colorway. I’m marking out.
  • The faces dominate early with quick tags. Ziggler is the heel whipping boy.
  • Cena is tagged in and you could hear loud groans drowning out the pre-pubescent squeels.
  • In a sick sequence – Ziggler catches Morrison launching into Starship Pain and blasts him to the mat with a modified Burning Hammer.
  • Rey has yet to tag in and the San Diego crowd EXPLODES. Now that’s a pop!
  • CM Punk and Rey are just magic together. I hope they feud again this year.
  • Punk catches a 619 and gives Rey a backbreaker.
  • Kane throws Rey out of the ring straight onto CM Punk’s knee. That has to be the dopest double team maneuver I’ve seen in WWE in ages.
  • Rey with a springboard moonsault on Wade Barrett. Nice!
  • Finsher Rally Time! Edge hits Ziggler with an Impaler – Sheamus cracks Edge with a Bro Kick – Morrison smacks Sheamus with a Flash Kick – Kane slams JoMo with a Chokeslam – Cena gets Kane up and drives him hard with an Attitude Adjustment – CM Punk destroys Cena with his GTS – Orton pulls off a wicked RKO on Punk – Drew comes in and gets Orton with a Futureshock DDT – R-Truth kills Drew with a Leaping reverse STO – Wade blasts Truth with a Bossman Slam – Rey comes off the top rope and ‘rana’s Wade into the 619 position, then drop toe holds Ziggler next to Wade, which leads to…
  • Rey getting off a Double 619 that set Ziggler up for an Edge spear! Lovely finish!

WINNERS: Edge, Randy Orton, John Morrison, R-Truth, Rey Mysterio & John Fruity Pebbles

–Fun fun match for what it was. The finisher rally ending was a sight to see and was done to a perfection. Tons of props to the San Diego crowd for being amped up.

Vicky Guerrero comes out and strips Edge of the World Title. She also accuses Edge of assaulting Teddy Long. She also tells Edge that he’s fired.

Booker T chimes in with a perfect “What the hell???”

Dashing Cody Rhodes Interview

  • DCR is wearing a Richard Hamilton mask.
  • He won’t put Rey on blast because he’s ten times the professional that Rey is.
  • He says his doctors have cleared him for travel.
  • Next week he has an announcement to make.

–Great promo. I hope this is the beginning of a huge push for DCR. He can talk and he can work. What more do you want?

Eve Torres & Beth Phoenix vs. Layla & Maryse (McCool is injured)

  • McCool is at the announcers’ table.
  • Maryse slaps Beth and Beth drops her face onto the turnbuckle and finishes her with a hard clothesline.
  • Eve with a nice suplex into a floatover for two.
  • Maryse and Layla give Eve a double side kick into the body while McCool distracted the ref from the ring apron.
  • Layla rolls her up for the win.

WINNER: Layla & Maryse

–I can’t say enough about Eve’s determination in the ring. I’m not sure if she’s at the level of Beth or Natalya but her wrestling has improved ten-fold. It’s only a matter of time before she gets the fan support she deserves. I believe she can be the Latina equivalent to Trish Stratus.

They replay the Rock’s appearance on RAW. I never get tired of watching that.

Kofi Kingston vs. The Miz

  • Kofi comes out in Hulkamania colors with a splash of lime.
  • Cole tools out while Miz walks to the ring. Ugh.
  • Kofi controls early with three high cross bodies.
  • Miz gains momentum with rest holds.
  • Kofi begins the Boom Drop but Alberto Del Rio comes out.
  • ADR distracts Kofi and Miz hits the Skull Crushing Finale for the duke.

ADR comes I the ring and starts laughing over Kofi Kingston.

–Nice to hear Booker give the Miz props for improving since he started his career.

I expected more from these two but they just didn’t click. It’s hard to explain but everything seemed off as far as the Kofi and Miz vibing in the ring. It wasn’t bad or anything but I just feel like they could do so much better.

The Borre (Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel) vs. Cobrazlov (Santino & Vladimir Kozlov)

  • Cobrazlov come down with the Giant Pennies Titles.
  • Kozlov kills Gabriel with a fallaway slam.
  • Ezekial and Wade Barrett come out to watch the match.
  • Kozlov is distracted by Wade and Slater chopblocks Kozlov from behind.
  • Santino is tagged in and wrecks shop.
  • Santino with a kip up to a Cobra on Gabriel! Wade and Ezekial come in!
  • Big Show comes in for the save. I smell a six man or handicap tag match in the future.
  • They tease an Ezekial-Show confrontation but the rest of the Borre persuade him to stand down.

WINNER: No Contest

— Good, but short match. I really wish they’d push Kozlov like they used to. At one point in his career, he was dominating the Undertaker. What the hell happened?

Booker T referenced James Brown when Santino did his splits counter into a hip toss move. Awesome.

In a perfect world, The Borre would have won the tag titles here to set up a title defense vs. The Undertaker and Sting at Wrestlemania.

Ziggler’s World Title Coronation

  • Vicky says her usual annoying shit to get the crowd riled up.
  • She then hands Ziggler the World Heavyweight Championship, which brings…
  • the return of Teddy Long!
  • Teddy walks into the ring with a pissed off and determined look.

Teddy Long grabs a mic:

  • He says that Vicky and Dolph look like they’re looking at a ghost.
  • He says that Vicky had the most to gain from his attack.
  • Vicky cracks and says that Dolph took Teddy Long out.
  • Teddy Long tells them to clear the ring.
  • Teddy puts on a World Title Match between Dolph and Edge.

World Heavyweight Title Match
Dolph Ziggler vs. Edge

  • Edge dominates early and drops Ziggler with a half nelson bulldog
  • Ziggler dodges a possible spear, which sends Edge barreling his shoulder into the corner post.
  • Ziggler slaps on the sleeper.
  • Edge dodges a clothesline and comes back to hit Ziggler with a Spear. Over.

WINNER and World Heavyweight Champion: Edge

Teddy comes back out and tells Ziggler that he’s fired.

Edge grabs a mic:

  • He says, “Excuse me.”
  • He was here on the first episode and is now the World Heavyweight Championship.
  • Confetti drops from the ceiling as Edge and the crowd sing “”Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.”

End of show.

The Show Overall

Great to see Teddy Long back. He’s the constant in a very inconsistent WWE.

Glad this nonsense is over. The World Heavyweight Championship should never change hands in some ridiculous way.

Finally, seeing the return of Dashing Cody Rhodes and Teddy Long were good moments. Rey’s Charger’s gear was a sight to see as well as finisher rally at the end of the 12-man tag.

Good and entertaining episode overall. All Smackdowns prior to a PPV should be like tonight’s episode and end with the main Smackdown angle. Smackdown episodes that have ended with some match that involves Raw wrestlers usually seem cheap and disrupt the show’s overall continuity. Having the big 12-man tag team match to open the show was great booking and really set the tone for the rest of the way. The PPV got its proper promotion and it still left a lot of time to develop and continue the Smackdown-centric storylines.
