Smackdown Thoughts & Review [1. 7. 11]

[Update. Warning –  very GIF heavy after the jump!]

Tuscon, AZ

The announcing team is Matt Striker, Mathews and Toolbox.

Edge © vs. Kane (Last Man Standing match)

  • We hate it when a champion comes out first. That’s a pro wrestling faux pas right there.
  • Kane dominates early by using his strength advantage.
  • Kane actually does a cruiser-ish running low dropkick to a seated Edge. Neat-O.
  • Edge spears Kane to the outside from the ring apron.
  • The fight goes to the hallways in the back of the arena.
  • Kane and Edge make their way up to the cheap seats and into the concession stands.
  • Edge avoids being thrown down the stairs in a wheelchair and returns with a big boot to Kane’s dome.
  • Kane gets up before the count of 6.
  • Action goes back the ring and Kane catches Edge coming off the top with a HUGE right hand blow.
  • Kane chokeslams Edge. The ref counts and Edge makes it up around 8.
  • Edge counters being rammed into a steel post and manages to give Kane the Edge–O–Matic on the steel steps! Kane gets up at 9! Awesome!
  • Kane counters a spear with a giant boot to the face. Edge gets up at 7.
  • Kane CHOKESLAMS Edge through the announcing table! Oh. My. God. Edge barely gets up by the 9 count by leaning on a fallen Matt Striker.
  • Edge throws a chair at Kane while he was climbing to the top turnbuckle. Edge destroys Kane with chair shots.
  • SPEAR! Edge gives a CON-CHAIR-TO to Kane’s left knee! Kane can’t get up! 10!

–Holy shit. This is probably the greatest curtain jerker to a Smackdown broadcast ever. Kudos to both men. They made me regret stating that I was tired of the feud. I take it all back. Kane proves that he still has it when an Urn-Light isn’t involved. Edge further solidifies his place among the greatest World Champions in the industry in the last 10 years.

Dolph Ziggler © vs. Kofi Kingston

  • Alrighty, let’s give the brother a title already.
  • Dolph with a nice neck breaker for a two count.
  • Nice sequence where Dolph counters a Ranhei and gets a roll up for two.
  • Dolph side steps a Trouble in Paradise attempt and slaps on the Sleeper. Kofi powers out of it and gives Dolph a sit-out chin buster.
  • Ranhei by Kofi for two!
  • Kofi hits a top rope gourdbuster! High Cross Body! One…Two…Threeeeeee!

Dolph attacks Kofi as he celebrates at the top turnbuckle. Vicky grabs the mic and says that Dolph gets a rematch that instant. Uggh.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston ©

  • Dolph dominates early. HUGE KOFI chant!
  • Dolph lifts Kofi up and gets hit with a Trouble in Paradise from close distance! Kofi covers! One…two…three!

WINNER: Kofi Kingston

–This match made up for its lack of length in pace and excitement. It’s comparable to the first encounter Dolph had with Daniel Bryan. If Dolph won the immediate rematch, pundits would say this was overbooked. With Kofi winning pretty decisively, the result is genius booking that promises an exciting future for the Intercontinental Title scene.

45 minutes in and this is by far one of the best Smackdowns in the last two years. Yes, I realize I’m talking out of my ass since I’m not going to bother to research to back up that claim.

  • Vicky calls Dolph a two-time loser. Dolph tells her that she needs to find a new boyfriend. Vicky freaks.

Raw rewind.

  • Kelly is walking through the halls and Drew pops out of nowhere like a creep. Drew asks Kelly to give him support in his upcoming match and wishes her good luck in her match.

Big Show vs. Dashing Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre

  • Sports Entertainment Wrestling Gods, please let it Cody Rhodes. Please.
  • Drew’s walkout t-shirt looks like it could represent the fifth House in Hogwarts – Drewflepuff?

Vicky Guerrero comes out and declares the match a Fatal 4-Way with guess who, Dolph Ziggler.

Big Show vs. Dashing Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler

  • Again, please let it be Cody Rhodes. Dolph is the lesser evil between him and Drew.
  • Show dominates the start and gives Dolph and Cody HUGE slaps to the chest.
  • Show keeps Drew and Dolph out of the ring and works on Cody.
  • Show gives Dolph the Reverse Legdrop Bulldog for a two count due to Cody breaking the pin attempt. I haven’t seen Show do that in a while.
  • Cody encourages Dolph to double team Big Show. Show pulls them both over the ropes.
  • Drew pushes Cody off the top rope onto Big Show on the outside.
  • Cody comes in and gives a nice Goldust punch to Drew and clotheslines him out of the ring.
  • Big Show sweeps Drew’s ankle on the ring apron that sends him bumping to the floor. Show has momentum!
  • WADE BARRETT comes in and attacks the Big Show then leaves!
  • Cody hits the Beautiful Disaster Kick on Big Show for a two count.
  • Dolph hits a Zig Zag for a two count.
  • Drew this the Future Shock DDT for a two count!
  • Show catches Drew off the top rope and sends him outside.
  • Dolph tricks Cody into attacking Big Show and hits Cody with the Zig Zag. It’s over.

WINNER and new number one contender: Dolph Ziggler

–This is the best first hour of Smackdown in a long time. Big Show looked the strongest in this match and he lost. Big Show kicking out of three different consecutive finishers was a sight to behold. Everybody came off really well, which should be the goal in almost every pro wrestling match. Like I said, Dolph is the lesser of two evils and I’m glad it was Dolph winning and not Drewflepuff.

Michelle McCool vs. Kelly Kelly

  • Kelly slapped on a nice looking leg triangle on McCool’s head over the ropes while she was doing a handstand on the ring apron.
  • Kelly lands a nice reverse head scissors takedown.
  • McCool counters the K2 and turns it into a Styles Clash Faithbreaker for the dub.

WINNER: Michelle McCool

Layla lifts Kelly Kelly up and LayCool gives Kelly a double Face Buster.

Drew McIntyre comes in and tells LayCool to get lost as he checks on Kelly.

–You really want me to analyze a wrestling match with Kelly Kelly in it? She looked great in pink wrestling gear and the leg triangle was pretty sweet. My inner-hater doesn’t approve of her in a storyline with Drew. That is all.

Alberto Del Rio’s personal Jerome, Ricardo Rodriguez, absolutely kills his mannerisms. I hope the WWE keeps him on board for as long as ADR is in the WWE.

ADR comes out and grabs the mic:

  • He says that his destiny is to win the Royal Rumble and main event Wrestlemania. Word.
  • He goes all elitist on the crowd and disses Rey Mysterio.

Alberto Del Rio vs. Rey Mysterio (2 out of 3 Falls)

  • Rey Rey comes out in a Mexican Flag color with half black and half white background colors. Sick!
  • ADR destroys Rey Rey early with leg kicks and strikes.
  • ADR dodges out of the way of a 619 and slaps on the Cross Arm Breaker! Rey taps! *ADR 1 – Rey 0
  • Rey regains momentum with a springboard headscissors. Nice!
  • Rey counters out of a quick Cross Arm Breaker attempt for a close two count.
  • ADR moves out of the way of another 619 but gets caught with a La Magistral roll up! One, two, three! *Rey 1 – ADR 1
  • Alberto works on Rey’s right arm.
  • Holy Shit! Flying Missile Headbutt by Rey! Two count.
  • ADR with an arm breaker across his knees.
  • HUGE 619 chant.
  • Sick sick sick springboard wheelbarrow DDT by Rey for a two count!
  • ADR hits a running dropkick to Rey’s face while he was in the Tree of Woe.
  • Rey hits a 619 on ADR’s face while he was on the ring apron!
  • Rey with a planchaaaaa! from the top to Ricardo and ADR on the outside!
  • Ricardo grabs Rey’s leg and prevents him from entering the ring! Ref counts to ten!

WINNER: Alberto Del Rio via countout 2 Falls to Rey’s 1

Rey confronts Ricardo Rodriguez. He kicks the hell out of Ricardo’s midsection.

Rey 619’s Ricardo. Rey hits the West Coast Splash. He celebrates as the show ends.

–I liked this match a lot but do I think they could have finished the match in a better way. What this finish accomplishes is leave the audience with the feeling that the feud isn’t truly over. In that case, I’m okay with the finish. However, Rey’s main event contender aura doesn’t lose a thing if ADR comes away with a clean victory. They should have given ADR two clean falls for the win but I’ll take it.

Toolbox needs to shut his pie hole. Listening to an idiot announce any match ruins its entertainment value. It’s a good thing this match was great enough for any viewer to ignore the idiocy.

Some Final Thoughts

The Fatal 4-Way for the Number One Contendership
I wish Cody won, but for some reason I liked the match as a whole and it will be fun seeing Vicky Guerrero (yes, Vicky and NOT Dolph) feud with Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship. I hope Vicky is being well-compensated for being arguably one of the top three heels in the WWE. Big Show came off as an unstoppable monster that he should always be in this match. The Barrett interference in the Fatal 4-Way added a lot of interest for the future of Smackdown and I look forward to seeing his first Smackdown feud with Big Show.

ADR vs. Rey Rey
The only thing I can say about this feud is that I wish they wrestled an Iron Man match. Besides Daniel Bryan and CM Punk, Rey and ADR are two of the very few wrestlers in the WWE that could pull off an entertaining 60 minute match. We can only hope that this match was an audition for ADR’s inevitable run as a main event champion. I sincerely hope that Alberto gets a co-main event slot at Wrestlemania for the World Heavyweight Championship.

The Show Overall
The first hour was as good as it gets. The World Championship match was well done with Edge and Kane giving their all. The IC Title match was short but there was never a dull moment. Kofi brought out the best in Dolph Ziggler…or was it the other way around?

The second hour boasted a great Fatal 4-Way that introduced a new main event player in Wade Barrett and re-established Big Show as the company’s biggest monster. The Rey vs. ADR match was just as stellar. Despite the weak finish, the match was great as a whole. This episode was a once-in-a-season Smackdown where every minute was entertaining and every match meant something. Just when I thought I was getting bored, I can’t help to admit that my interest in Smackdown is at an all-time high.

I gotta say man, after reading this I marked out and didn’t wait until tomorrow to watch Smackdown. Its 11:30pm and I’m sick but that just read like a must-see!

    • Great Puma Says:

Tru dat. This was a ridiculous show. If this was a pay per view in 2010 it would have been in the top 4. I’m exaggerating but I’m sipping that cough syrup. Burp!

  2. D-Gellybean Says:

Since when is Vicky calling matches at Smackdown?? I thought Teddy Long was the GM?? I don’t think they’re gonna have Edge lose to Dolph…I also think they’re gonna have the match on Smackdown, like they had the #1 contender JoMo fight Miz on Raw….

    • Great Puma Says:

Agreed. Dolph is definitely a transitional contender to Edge’s transitional championship run. ADR should be the man next to hold the World Heavyweight Championship! Thanks again for stopping by, Gelly! GIFS on the way in the next update.

    Nice post.

@gifs: please switch to small, embedded videos… the looping gifs are nice to see once (and in general a welcome addition) , but are reeeally annoying (think blinking flash ads) while reading the text.

    • Great Puma Says:

Thanks, Zank. I’ll take note of that. We’re still trying to work out the kinks. Perhaps I’ll link to the gifs on a separate page. We appreciate you stopping by!
