The Punk Effect

I’ve had a night to think about this, trying not to get too excited about what a Punk ran Nexus could be. Obviously all of my problems with this point to one thing… the WWE.

The Nexus was the best surprise of 2010 and if it was done properly, it could have ranked up there with classic WWE moments. But in true WWE fashion, they have taken the fear out of Nexus by having one man (John Cena) take out the group single handedly. As you all know, I have not been a fan of how this has been carried out since Cena’s “firing”, basically for all the reasons CM Punk stated on RAW last night. Hearing Punk list off all the wrong things with Cena’s “firing” was awesome and a little part of me hopes he had something to do with this angle.

In thinking about the new Nexus direction, here are the things I pondered…

– If Punk is in control, where does that leave Wade Barrett and his power struggle with David Otunga. Not that I want to see a Otunga vs. Barrett feud but that did seem like that is where this was all going.

– Will the WWE actually get behind this and not fuck this up like they did the SES. Yeah, I understand Serena’s release was more because of her own doings but Gallows & Mercury were team players and still got the boot. Both more talented than most Nexus members.

– This does keep Nexus alive but then again it keeps them attached to Cena which makes the group one dimensional.

– Where will this leave Nexus in the long run when the Punk vs. Cena feud is over?

Ultimately I want this to work and think it could be good IF the proper work is put into it and establishes Punk as the true leader now. Also I think its important for them to have Punk send out Nexus to feud with other people, possibly picking up titles along the way giving Nexus more to do than just be Punk’s backup band in the Cena show.

I’m hopeful the WWE will do this right but also gun shy to get fully behind it. If Punk does have input in this, this could really work but the WWE has to trust him. The guy is a true talent and giving him a little artistic freedom like they’ve been letting him do on commentary could be the kick in the ass this company needs. Its been a rough decade for the WWE and taking chances is all they have in their court at the moment.

Agreed. However, anything different at this moment is a good choice for the Nexus storyline. Seeing Otunga and Barrett argue over the last two months has gotten extremely stale. Something had to be done and Punk being the new ‘management’ is indeed better than nothing at all.
