The Hayabusa Weekly Wrap Up [6.16.2010]

Every week the writers of FighterHayabusa get together and watch old episodes of Falcon Crest, with commercials.  During the advertising breaks, we happen to discuss anything and everything about pro wrestling. Here’s  a transcript of our intellectual exchange on June 16, 2010:

Mascara De Fuego: Welcome everyone to another Hayabusa Weekly Wrap Up, Puma are you ready for this weeks topics?

Great Puma: Ready as a 27 year old virgin on his first trip to TJ!

Mascara De Fuego: I thought we said we wouldn’t bring up personal things tonight… and for the record I was 26 1/2….

Great Puma: Well if you didn’t say anything nobody would have known. Ahem. Sorry.

Mascara De Fuego: oh…right… well shit, let’s go to our first topic, NXT!

Huge angles the last couple of weeks with the season one NXT roster, any thoughts on this angle?

Great Puma: I think it was well done and totally unexpected after witness 3 hours of a mediocre attempt at doing RAW like Cyber Sunday. I feel like they purposely made the show incredibly sh*tty so that the shock and impact of the invasion would be so much more devastating. It was like watching Fight Club right after watching Bambi. Not that I’ve ever watched that combination of films in that particular order.

I’m hoping the NXT rookies all get contracts and continue to make a nuisance of themselves. Hopefully this will lead to a huge blow off match at Survivor Series with the rookies taking on the upper tier of the WWE’s main event scene. That would be the perfect payoff for this angle.

Also, it would be interesting if they give Wade Barrett a title to further the prestige of winning a season of NXT. I hope most of the NXT rookies don’t wrestle for another few months so that they could improve their in-ring work. Right now, I think Barrett is the only Season 1 rookie that could really work a match.

Mascara De Fuego: I think it was great and helped not only shake things up which the WWE needed but it made all of these guys who were mostly made to look week look like viable threats. I think they are doing the invasion angle they tried back in the early 2000’s with WCW/ECW.

I do hope they’ve learned their lessons from that. I have a feeling that because these are true WWE guys and not red headed step children like WCW was, I think this could have a chance if done well. But I agree with you, this would be a great angle (if done well) to take all the way to the Survivor Series.

Mascara De Fuego: Good point on just having Barrett wrestle and not they other guys.

Great Puma: Thanks. I’m just not sure I could stomach a David Otunga singles match just yet. All those kids need some serious seasoning in their wrestling game still. But I’m still very stoked about the angle!

Mascara De Fuego: I think they all have something to offer but not all of them is in the ring. They could use this angle to cover up their weakness.

What do you think of Bryan Danielson’s release?

Great Puma: Business is business. The Benoit Tragedy and Linda McMahon’s political endeavors have scared the WWE into a state of family friendly entertainment. Seeing Bryan choke a guy out with his own tie probably scared the hell out of the WWE brass. The WWE can’t possibly make more money if they scare off their advertisers and intended audience, which absolutely isn’t us (as in longtime “smark” wrestling fans). I think it sucks for the pro wrestling heads that have followed his career since his APW days but life in the WWE will go on. Wade Barrett is killing it right now and the NXT angle is in good hands with or without Bryan.

Mascara De Fuego: I was shocked about this and don’t understand how this warranted a firing and not a simple warning. Yeah the WWE is “PG” now and I get that they have more at steak to keep this rating but come on, even if the guy knew that choking was a no-no, it was a fucking mistake. Hell, if you watch the video over again Slater briefly choked Cena with the ring rope but his wack ass is still around. I think it will be stupid for the WWE to lose Danielson over this. But we shall see…

Great Puma: Yeah this is just as weird as Matt Hardy’s firing from the WWE when the whole Edge-Lita thing went down. I just have a feeling Bryan will be back. His name gets brought up way too often in the WWE.

Mascara De Fuego: Also, fact that John Cena has brought him up on this Twitter account and radio interviews is interesting. You would figure that bringing up a fired employee is a bad thing but he’s doing it.

Great Puma: Exactly. I hope it’s all a work. Kudos to the WWE for allowing him to appear on ROH and EVOLVE cards to make this angle more interesting.

Do you think the release of Danielson will be a huge push for smaller fed’s like Ring of Honor or EVOLVE having him on the roster?

Great Puma: I’m not so sure. It’s not like Bryan endeared himself to the common wrestling fan that wears Mysterio masks and Cena jerseys. I foresee a small increase in interest for EVOLVE and ROH but nothing major.

Mascara De Fuego:
If he doesn’t go back to the WWE I think this could be a good step with ROH getting more notoriety. Welcoming back guys like Chris Daniels and Bryan Danielson could help get ROH a little name recognition. But then again if you know those two names you’re probably a wrestling head already and are already watching most of the shows.

Who would you build as the guy who took out The Undertaker?

Mascara De Fuego: I think it has to be the NXT guys. This would be a huge notch for them if they could say they not only took out the WWE Champion but a legend like the Undertaker. Unfortunately I think its going to end up being Kane which is going to stuck. Who wants to watch another feud by these guys!?

Great Puma: I really love your NXT scenario. That totally works for me. But I’d like it to be CM Punk or Jericho. Both of them deserve a high profile feud with Kane and the Undertaker. Not that Jericho needs a feud with ‘Taker but I just enjoy watching that dude work – period. If Sting was not under contract, I’d totally love to see him be the man who “took ‘Taker out”. It’d be twenty years in the making.

It would be disappointing if it was Kane. Plus, the adds so much to Kane’s character as a face. I haven’t heard this much pop for Kane in a very long time. If anything, I’d like to see a Brothers of Destruction reunion than another brother vs. brother feud.

Mascara De Fuego: Very true! This has made people care about Kane again which I didn’t think was possible for them to do. Feuding him with Taker would be such a waste and would kill all the work they’ve done here. Plus it would give the suspect a good feud until Taker does come back.

Let’s move on to this weekend’s ppv…

Fatal 4 Way for the WWE Championship, Cena vs. Orton vs. Sheamus vs. Edge

Great Puma: Common sense says Orton takes it but I think they’ll give it to Edge so he can lose it to Orton in a one on one match at Summerslam.

Mascara De Fuego: I don’t see why Cena wouldn’t retain the Title unless its to build the NXT angle more. I would like to see Edge take it like you said to build up the feud with Orton. Should be a good match for the most part I think.

Fatal 4 Way for the World Championship, Swagger vs. Mysterio vs. Punk vs. Big Show

Great Puma: I’d like to see Swagger get a long title run so I’ll go with Swagger. Punk is a close second but it’s harder for S.E.S. to get a cheap victory since there are too many combatants in the ring. Usually, faces win titles in singles matches, in my opinion, so I don’t think Mysterio or Big Show will get the duke.

Mascara De Fuego: Swagger’s my pick too. Similar to the WWE Title match, I don’t see why they would take the title off of Swagger right now, the guy is working it. I’m looking forward to this match over the other Title match and hope that it will be match of the night with four different styles of wrestlers.

United States Champion The Miz vs. R-Truth

Great Puma: One day I wish the WWE will give Truth the respect and recognition he deserves. The Miz really doesn’t need another lengthy title run. I feel like he’s ready for bigger and better things. Truth, on the other hand, needs at least one solid run with a belt just to establish solid footing in the upper echelon of the WWE. After all, R-Truth is a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion.

Mascara De Fuego: I’m going with The Miz. Should be a good match but I don’t see why they’d take the title off of Miz just after winning it. I think Truth should have had a longer title run but it is the WWE…

Fatal 4 Way for the Diva’s Championship, Eve vs. Gail Kim vs. Maryse vs. Alicia Fox

Great Puma: I don’t see Eve losing the belt for a while. It seems like she’s gaining steam in her popularity without the WWE pushing her down our throats. Okay, well, maybe just a little bit.

Mascara De Fuego: I don’t care, if I have to choose someone, Maryse. She’s the only believable heel they have right now.

That brings us to the end of another Hayabusa Wrap Up, do you have any parting words?

Great Puma: Bring Bryan Danielson back please!  I’m out like Jake Shields in Strikeforce.

Mascara De Fuego: Until all are one… or at least until they plug this oil leak..
