Fighter Hayabusa Thoughts on NXT Episode 1 (2.23.10)

The two writers of Fighter Hayabusa were so stoked before tonight’s debut episode of NXT, we just had to post our thoughts after the show was over.

Mascara De Fuego: So Puma, the first NXT is in the record books, what are your thoughts on the premier show?

Great Puma: It looked like FCW with a bigger arena. They should have went balls out and gone the Ultimate Fighter route. However, Bryan vs Jericho was good for what it was. I wish it had more time.

Mascara De Fuego: I have to say I was disappointed with the show for the most part. I did expect it to be more like Tough Enough/Ultimate Fighter than ECW lite.

Great Puma: ECW-lite or FCW-heavy exactly.  Not sure why they KILLED Darren Young so soon on the first show.  Horrible writing and booking.

Mascara De Fuego: Maybe this leads to Young shaving his head?

Great Puma: Not sure if he can come back from that horrible match.  Otunga looks like a star but they could have built both men a whole lot better. I’d be pissed if I was Darren Young. I guess he’s on the path to being an enhancement talent.

Mascara De Fuego: Otunga definitely came off (especially on his promo) as a star. Now its all down to his ring work.

Great Puma: True. Otunga’s botched Ura-nage/spine buster deal didn’t look too strong.

Mascara De Fuego: Which made Young look even weaker.

Great Puma: Exactly. They shouldn’t have ended that match on such a messed up finish.

Mascara De Fuego: Yeah.

Great Puma: What did you think of Wade Barret? I think his voice is tremendous in a Darth Vader way.

Mascara De Fuego: I think Barrett sounded dope and is a big dude, what that means in the ring we will have to see.

Great Puma: So I’m thinking this season is all about building up the tension and eventual feud between Daniel Bryan and the Miz. When do you see that match finally taking place?

Mascara De Fuego: If they are smart it will be on the season finale. It shouldn’t be before then, building up the tension week in and week out over NXT, RAW and ppv’s.

Great Puma: True. The only problem is that they have never built up an angle for 16 weeks unless Shawn and the Undertaker are involved. I’m thinking in the next 5 or 6 episodes.

Mascara De Fuego: Too bad they don’t go to the old school booking anymore. What do you think of an NXT Title, do you think it will add to the show or not?

Great Puma: Not really sure if the show needs an NXT title. For me it seems that the goal for the rookies is move on to the bigger shows and “win” the season. It’s a shame they’re not filling us in on how everything works.  I think informing the audience of the rules and actual goal for the “characters” is the first rule of any reality show. It’s almost as if they’re making things up as they go along. It’s a shame.

Mascara De Fuego: I’m thinking if they are going to keep this format they are going to need more than just a contract, like if you hold the title for 3 months you automatically get moved onto the main roster. If the style of the show was different, I could see this just being about a contract.  Or whoever is the Champion by the end of the season, they get moved up.  Just seems like they need to make this about something more.

Great Puma: But with only 8 wrestlers, I’m not sure how much credibility and prestige an NXT title would behold. They should have built up towards a tournament or maybe even a round robin tournament with points like the All Japan Carnival.  I agree with you in spirit but this current format seems to be a little thrown together. What is so hard about emulating all the other reality shows from The Ultimate Fighter to Big Brother to Top Chef? Odd.

Mascara De Fuego: ECW might have had a bigger roster but less than 5 guys ever fought for that Title or were worthy of contending for it.  It’s not hard to emulate Ultimate Fighter when the WWE created that format though. Tough Enough was that.

Great Puma: To a point. I feel the Ultimate Fighter has taken a personality on its own far away from Tough Enough. It’s very technical and the build up to its fights on every episode is unparalleled. I was looking forward to the pro’s actually doing some sort of coaching before the match and other things we might not see on a regular wrestling broadcast. If they didn’t have Bryan vs Jericho I would say this first episode was somewhat of a failure.

Mascara De Fuego: I still think this first episode was. I think they have a lot of work ahead of themselves to improve this already.

Great Puma: I totally agree. At least make this show right for next season when KAVAL comes! The saving grace for this season is Daniel Bryan. An episode without him is going to be somewhat difficult to watch. This is one show where they can afford to educate and entertain the audience with more video packages and drama and less in-ring action. They should save the in-ring action for the last ten to fifteen minutes of each half hour. They should allow us to get to know each wrestler and how they trained before their respective matches.

Mascara De Fuego: “Know” the wrestler, not all of their gimmicks.

Great Puma: Tarver’s story is actually pretty compelling, but they need to give him more video/promo time to get his character across. If anything, they could have delayed Daniel Bryan’s first match like the UFC did with Kimbo Slice. The internet will be watching as long as he gets some camera time every episode.

Mascara De Fuego: But is giving air time to Bryan enough to get him over with the WWE which ultimately what this is about?

Great Puma: I think so with some wrestling thrown in. They should have given them ten minutes to work at least. Daniel Bryan did look impressive at least in the allotted time.

Mascara De Fuego: Lets hope the WWE can pull it together and put something together compeling that we will want to watch. Ok that wraps it up for us tonight, tune in later in the week for our Weekly Wrap Up.

Great Puma: I’m out like Darren Young’s hair.

Mascara De Fuego: Until All Are One.
